Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) contains an essential oil rich in thymol, which supports the function of ciliated cells in the bronchi and has a beneficial effect on the bronchial mucosa. Studies show that the components of volatile Thyme oil have demonstrated activity against various bacteria and fungi. Thymol, named after the plant itself, is the most important component of thyme, and its beneficial effects for humans are well-documented. Thymol helps to increase the percentage of beneficial fats in cell membranes and other cellular structures. Specifically, the amount of docosahexaenoic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) in the cell membranes of brain, kidney, and heart cells increases after dietary supplementation with thyme.
